Recycling day! (Part 2)

This is the other recycled craft I made today. A big thanks to Terry for introducing me to Frilly and Funkie! (I can see another obsession starting!) I am entering it into the RePurpose to UpCycle challenge as it uses two different kinds of repurposed items! :)

The idea came just as I was trying to get out the door. I started thinking about Mother's Day and making something for Mad Scrapper ... and then the idea hit to make a gift bag using some of the Heidi Swapp paper that recently came in.

It all started with the cover of a 12x12 paper pad.

I cut the 12 x 12 cover in half. With one of the half sheets, I scored the paper so that a 5" tall by 4" wide box could be made. I used some Tissue Tape to fasten the edges, then started applying some paper to the sides.

To make the handles, I cut off about 1.5" from the top of a brown paper bag. I cut this strip in half, then rolled each piece to create a handle.

I glued the handles to the inside of the bag, then covered up with a strip of paper. I then cut out some flowers; misted them with Glimmer Mist, then applied some Stickles to the center. My white ribbon is from Mad Scrapper and the yellow ribbon is from the $1 bin at Michael's.

Well, that's all for now! My last project for April is Tim's tag ... wish me luck! :)

Recycling day! (Part 1)

Well, not exactly - my bag of things to put in the recycle bin is still sitting at the top of the steps, patiently waiting to go outside, but it was an afternoon of recycling in a different sort of way!

You see, I love the challenge of repurposing old items like glass and cardboard, and turning them into a whimsical craft or gift. I also love putting my scraps to good use ... and when you put the two together, you can create a unique gift that cost pennies to make!

Take this little 4 x 4 square cardboard box. I used some Echo Park scraps from a baby boy mini album to cover the entire thing. My scraps also included some stickers that have the days of the week on them, so I turned this little box into a weekly planner for a little boy. G45ers will recognize the typewriter wood stamps ... they're just adorable!

Part 2 coming next ...

Compendium of Curiosities 2: Challenge #2

Hello! Since I was horribly late in completing the first challenge, I wanted to get a head start on the second CC2C that Linda posted this morning.

This challenge is all about Tim's Faux Patina technique, which you can find in his new book. :) Linda shared a beautiful bracelet as well as a gorgeous canvas that her friend made with the same technique. Interested? Just head over to the Studio L3 blog for more details on how you can participate!

For my entry in the challenge, I decided to alter a lovely little glass jar that I found in an antique store. I decided to do this versus a tag, ATC, or canvas merely because the Faux Patina technique made me think of the recent photos that surfaced earlier this week from the Titanic.  I guess my inspiration is a little macabre, but I just thought this little bottle is one of the kinds of things you may find in the famous ship's wreckage.

I can't share Tim's technique, but I can tell you that I used black tulle, Claudine Helmuth's Studio Gloss, Perfect Pearls, and lots of Distress Crackle Paint to create an aged, weathered look around most of my bottle. I wish my flowers and ball chain had more of that Faux Patina look; guess I'll have to try this again! :)

Thanks for looking! Now, I'm going to clean house ... my dear friend Lisa is visiting me this week from Oregon. She's signed up for my class tomorrow along with a weekend full of fun in the Emerald City! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend as well ... till then, take care and happy crafting to you!

Compendium of Curiosities 2: Challenge #1

Thanks to my recent bout of spaciness (or maybe just burn out) I almost missed the very first Compendium of Curiosities 2 challenge, hosted by the lovely Linda from Studio L3. This first project from the new challenge series was a blast to make! It's another one of those Tim techniques that make you go "Wow! Wish I thought of this. I'm going to do this all the time!" No wonder he's the king of craft, right?!

Simon Says Stamp is sponsoring this fun challenge. They've been known to award a lovely prize a time or two. :)

And without further ado, here is my entry for the first CC2 challenge, based off of Tim's custom foam technique from page 66 of his new book:

The inspiration to use Tim's sewing room die came from the above Stampers Anonymous stamp. I immediately thought about people who go back to school to pursue their dream career ... whether it's hair, cooking, clothing design, etc. This particular tag pays homage to everyone who ever dreams about starting their own clothing or accessory line!

I used Liquid Pearls to make my necklace, along with some Idea-ology Foliage.

My skirt was made from some of Tim's Idea-ology Trimmings and Tissue Tape. (I used some Weathered Wood Distress Stain for the waist.)

I love Tim's idea for custom foam stamps! They work very well and I know I'll be making plenty more of these ...

Well, that is all, folks ... I am sooo excited for this challenge! I just got Tim's book today and just love everything that I see. And a big thank you goes to Sannie for helping me get access to Thumblinky - I am going to add all the supplies for this project right now! (It's a wonderful supply list tool for all of us visual people!)
